Overcoming anxieties and help through prayer.

Prayer should not be a repetitive ritual, but rather a genuine communication with God. Jesus said, "Do not keep saying the same things over and over." In other words, our prayers need to be from the heart, not just repeating the same things again and again, if they are to have meaning. We are encouraged to "pour out our hearts" to God, in the Psalms or the Zabur (as it is known by Moslems, the Gita, for Hindus.)

Also, prayers should be repsectfully offered, direct and specific. One does not have to be in church or in some othe special buidling to pray. One can pray when walking or in the car, in one's room at night, or anywhere where one has privacy. If we have problems with depression, pray for wisdom to deal with the situation and the strength to do us, as well as for help to get through the moment or the day and to overcome whatever disorder you might be facing.

While we don't repetetively or ritualistically offer prayers for them to be effective, we might pray about the same problem many times.

David in the Bible, or Daud-elesaalam, as a Muslim would say,  was one who experienced periods of great anxiety and distress. His prayers are found throughout the Zabur or Psalms, and are of much comfort for anyone experiencing emotional turmoil. Reading both teh Psalms and the Injil, the Gospels, is also a strengthening aid.

Some other encouraging scriptures are, "Do not be anxious over anything but in everything by prayer and supplication make your petitions made known to God and the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart by means of Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6,7.

"While you throw all your anxiety upon him, because he cares for you."
1 Peter 5:6,7

Also, the Holy Scriptures, helps us to overcome "all or nothing thinking." God knows we will make mistakes and expects us to, he doesn't predistine us to do so,  nor does he punish us for deeds committed in another life. Rather, he is described as "merciful" and "forgiving".

The scriptures say that "he has not done to us according to our sins, nor according to our error has he brought upon us what we deserve. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, his loving kindness is superior towards those fearing Him. As a father shows mercy to his sons, Yahweh has shown mercy" towards us.

Psalm 103 is here in its entirity and its words give peace and comfort:

Bless Jehovah, O my soul

Even everything within me

Bless his holy name

Bless Jehovah O my soul

And do not forget all his doings

Him who is forgiving all your error

Who is healing all your maladies

Who is reclaiming your life from the very pit

Who is crowning you with loving kindness and mercies

Who is satisfying your lifetime with what is good

Your youth keeps renewing itself just like that of an eagle.

Jehovah is executing acts of righteousness

And judicial decisions for all those being defrauded

He made known his ways to Moses

His dealings even to the sons of Israel

Jehovah is merciful and gracious

Slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness

He will not for all time keep finding fault

Neither will he to time indefinite keep resentful

He has not done to use even according to our sins

Nor according to our errors

has he brought upon us what we deserve

For as the heavens are higher than the earth

His loving-kindness is superior toward those fearing him

As far off as the sunrise is form the sunset

So far off from us has he has put our transgressions

As a father shows mercy to his sons

Jehovah has shown mercy to those fearing him

For he himself well knows the formation of us

Remembering that we are dust

As for mortal man, his days are like those of green grass

Like a blossom of the field is the way he blossoms forth

For a mere wind has to pass over it, and  it is nor more

And its place will acknowledge it no further

But the loving-kindness of Jehovah is from time indefinite even to time indefinite

Toward those fearing him

And his righteousness to the sons of sons

Toward those keeping his covenant

And toward those remembering his orders so as to carry them out

Jehovah himself has firmly established his throne in the very heavens

And over everything his own kinship has held domination

Bless Jehovah O you angels of his

Mighty in power carrying out his word

By  listening to the  voice of his word

Bless Jehovah all you armies of his

You ministers of his doing his will

Bless Jehovah all you his works

In all places of his domination

Bless Jehovah O My soul.
