The Sermon on the Mount is recognized by both Christian and
non-Christian authorities as one of the best treatises on mental health.
The few chapters of the Gospel of Matthew chapters 5-7 cover the most fundemental human needs for happiness.

Below is the most well known section of the Sermon on the Mount, commonly referred to as the beatitudes.

It is here that is found the original words of the Golden Rule, first spoken by Jesus, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Jesus also stated, "There is more happiness in giving than in recieving," which has proven true with regards to human emotional and psychological needs. Persons who can learn to give of them self, are often more successful in achieving good mental health and happiness.

Blessed are those conscious of their spiritual need,

Since the Kingdom of Heavens is theirs.

Blessed are the gentle,

They shall have the earth as  inheritance.

Blessed are those who mourn,

They shall be comforted.

Blessed are those

Who hunger and thirst for uprightness,

They shall have their fill.

Blessed are the merciful,

They shall have mercy shown them.

Blessed are the pure in heart,

They shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

They shall be recognized as children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness,

The kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you

And speak all kinds of wicked things

Against you falsely on my account.

Rejoice and leap for joy , for your reward will be great in heaven;

This is how they persecuted the prophets before you.

From the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus.
